Approval of Textbooks

Textbooks placed in service at all levels of instruction shall have the approval of the Board.

Texts to be used in English, health and social studies classes, or any book deemed to be controversial by the Superintendent of Schools shall be subject to review automatically by the Board between regularly scheduled meetings after presentation.  All other texts may be approved when presented by the Superintendent of Schools at any regularly scheduled meeting.

The Board of Education shall fulfill the intent of the State Statutes making policies for the arrangement, use and safekeeping, and the approval of textbooks used in the district schools. In addition, the Board considers that in order to provide for the uniformity of instruction, the system-wide use of a textbook series is most desirable, except if in the judgment of the Superintendent of Schools, circumstances dictate otherwise. Therefore, the Superintendent of Schools shall establish procedures for the examination and evaluation of textbooks and for textbook adoption presentation to the Board or appropriate sub-committee for approval, as the need arises.

The approval for use of supplementary texts and materials falls within the jurisdiction of the Superintendent of Schools and administration or their designee.
