Grade Weighting/Class Ranking

The Board of Education is (not) in favor of weighted grading.

Parents/guardians shall be advised as to whether a grade in an honors class, advanced placement class, International Baccalaureate program, Cambridge International program, dual enrollment, dual credit or early college is or is not given added weight for purposes of calculating grade point average and determining class rank. The grading system developed by the administration, subject to Board approval, shall reflect this.

Parents/Guardians and students shall be notified annually of the Board's position via the parent/student handbook and/or the high school's website.

Modification Required Beginning with the 2022-2023 School Year

The Board of Education (Board), beginning with the 2022-2023 school year, and for each school year thereafter, for the purpose of qualifying a student for the Connecticut Automatic Admissions Program, will:

1.  calculate a grade point average using the standardized method established by the Board of Regents for Higher Education for each student who completes eleventh grade, and

2.  determine whether such student's class rank percentile is above or below the minimum established by the Board of Regents for Higher Education.

The Board will share a student's grade point average and whether such student is above or below the minimum class rank percentile with the student, the student's parent or guardian, the Department of Education, in the form and manner prescribed by the Department, and upon the student's request, a participating institution for the purposes of applying to such participating institution under the Connecticut Automatic Admissions Program.  The Board shall permit the parent of a student to have access to the student's class rank.

The Board recognizes that it is not required to publish or provide a class ranking for any student or to publish on a student's transcript the grade point average calculated pursuant to the Connecticut Automatic Admissions Program, or whether such student is above or below the minimum class rank percentile established by the Board of Regents for Higher Education pursuant to the Connecticut Automatic Admissions Program.

The Board, beginning with the 2022-2023 school year and each school year thereafter, will notify each student enrolled in his/her final year of high school, and the parent or guardian of such student, whether such student may be admitted to at least one participating institution under the Connecticut Automatic Admissions Program based on the academic threshold established by such institution.

Optional

Criteria

High school courses are assigned to one of five categories according to the following criteria:

Category 1: Courses that are highly related to the academic demands of most four year colleges are in this category. These courses will require an overall homework time expectation that averages double the assigned class time and may have stringent prerequisites for enrollment. In addition, they will require in-depth study, independent reading and research, and/or preparation of comprehensive papers and reports. Advanced placement courses and courses designated as "honors level" are in this category.

Category 2: Courses that relate to the academic demands of most four year colleges, or, courses that are performance-oriented in which a high degree of proficiency is required as evidenced by successful completion of prerequisites and enrollment which is dependent upon instructor approval are in this category. These courses require reading and writing and/or project assignments with homework time expectations averaging that which is at least equal to the assigned class time.

Category 3: Courses that are intended to improve the general knowledge or skills of a student, prepare him/her to function successfully in today's society, and/or provide job-entry skills are in this category. Homework is assigned where applicable.

Category 4: Courses that are taught at a basic level or below grade level are in this category.

Category 5: Introductory vocational and/or artistic courses are in this category. These courses are unweighted to encourage exploration without penalty to a student's rank in class.
