Field Trips
To the extent the budgetary resources permit, the Board of Education encourages and sanctions student trips or other out-of-district school activities, including participation in interscholastic events, community civic projects and international travel which are of value in helping achieve each participating student's educational objectives.
The school staff, under the direction of the administration, shall take all reasonable and prudent steps to safeguard the physical and educational welfare of participating students. Each such student shall be given guidance in setting up educationally sound variations in his/her school program to enable him/her to participate and shall be counseled as to his/her obligations in fulfilling them. The administration may place restrictions upon a student's participation when in the staff's judgment the student s welfare requires it.

Medications For Field Trips
Medications are to be administered on field trips as follows:
1. The school nurse may prepare a single dose of a medication, place it in an appropriately labeled envelope, and give it to the person designated to administer it during a field trip. This activity falls within the scope of administration versus dispensing medication. The individual who administers this single dose of medication must document this on the individual medication administration record or may document on a separate sheet of paper which may then be affixed to the individual medication administration record upon returning to the school.
2. Multiple doses of a medication which must be administered on a field trip may not be placed in an envelope by the school nurse. This activity is classified as dispensing versus administration, and is not a nursing function. It is recommended that multiple doses of a medication be transported in a travel pack (limited quantity prescription) obtained from a pharmacist. A travel pack must have its own proof of use record for controlled substances.
3. Any medication transported on a field trip may be stored in a safe manner on the person of the individual designated to administer it. No further protection is required. If the medication is not stored on an individual s person, it is recommended that it be stored in a locked box and placed in a safe location.
4. Students enrolled in the self-carry/self-administer program will follow all regulations required for the program during school hours and on school-related trips.
