Assignment to Teachers and Classes:

The Board of Education recognizes that providing a quality education for all the children in Somers is the primary goal of the Somers Public Schools.  To this end, administrators and teachers are employed to diagnose the needs of students and to then place these students in the most appropriate educational setting, keeping in mind both the needs of each individual student and the good of the entire school program.  It is further understood that parents/guardians can provide valuable information regarding the educational placement of their child.

1.  Assignment of students to classes shall be the responsibility of the administration.

2.  Class assignments shall be based upon the following criteria as recommended by the Superintendent of Schools.  The criteria are the result of cooperative planning and study by members of the professional staff under the direction of the administration.

Scheduling

Maturity

Reading ability

Work habits

Daily performance

Standardized test scores

Prior academic experience (course sequence)

Class size

      Consideration shall also be given to the group’s compatibility and productivity.

Effects of previous parent experience with assigned class/program shall be taken into consideration, as well.

3.  The input of parents/guardians throughout the preceding year will be considered.  Any parent/guardian request for appeal of their child’s formal class placement  must be addressed to the appropriate building principal in written form, and received within 10 working days of such notification.

4.  The final decision on placement is the responsibility of and will be made by the Superintendent of Schools or his designee based upon the assessment of each student’s case according to the above criteria as applied by the student’s teacher(s) and other professional staff.
